Mawson actually traveled with Shackelton on one of his earlier expeditions, in 1907 to 1909. His own survival story might even top the doomed voyage of the Endurance in the annals of the greatest ever recorded.

The Australasian Antarctic Expedition of the 1910s was Mawson's plan to visit the heretofore unexplored region of King George V Land, the part of Antarctica directly south of Australia. Mawson trekked across the ice with British officer Belgrave Ninnis and Swiss skier Xavier Mertz, but 35 days in, Ninnis fell through the ice into a deep crevasse; many of the sled dogs and a lot of the provisions fell in with him. The two survivors turned back, but had precious little food and five weeks of travel ahead of them. So—and there's no easy way to say this—they ate some of the dogs, and fed parts of them to the remaining dogs.

Both men grew sick and gaunt. Mertz, understandably, went completely insane and died, possibly related to eating dog liver that is now known to contain extremely high levels of vitamin A (the Inuit know not to do this). Mawson himself later fell into a crevasee and had to pull himself out, twice, with nothing more than raw determination. He made it back to base only to find out he'd missed his ship by a matter of hours, and would have to winter in Antarctica another year. He would live more than 40 more years.
